How to Calculate NRR

The full formula, applied across every match a team has played in the tournament so far:

NRR = (Total Runs Scored ÷ Total Overs Faced) − (Total Runs Conceded ÷ Total Overs Bowled)

NRR is cumulative — you sum runs and overs across every completed match, then apply the formula once, rather than averaging each match's individual figure.

1ODI example
Team scores 280 in 50 overs batting first, then bowls the opponent out for 240 in 46.2 overs.
(280 ÷ 50) − (240 ÷ 50) = 5.600 − 4.800 = +0.800
The bowled-out team is capped at the full 50 overs for this calculation, even though they were dismissed in 46.2.
2T20 example
Team scores 165 in 20 overs, then restricts the opponent to 150 all out in 18.4 overs.
(165 ÷ 20) − (150 ÷ 20) = 8.250 − 7.500 = +0.750
Same bowled-out rule applies: 18.4 becomes 20 overs for the NRR calculation.
3IPL example
Team chases 190 and wins with 3 wickets in hand, getting there in 18.2 overs, having earlier conceded 190 in 20 overs.
(191 ÷ 18.333) − (190 ÷ 20) = 10.418 − 9.500 = +0.918
Because the chase finished before 20 overs, only 18.2 (18.333 decimal) overs count as faced — this is the single biggest lever teams use late in an IPL league stage.
4World Cup example
Team scores 302 in 50 overs, then bowls the opponent out for 210 in 41.5 overs.
(302 ÷ 50) − (210 ÷ 50) = 6.040 − 4.200 = +1.840
A big first-innings total combined with a cheap bowled-out opponent produces one of the largest single-match NRR swings possible.
5Rain-affected match without DLS revision
Match reduced to 30 overs a side before either team bats; team scores 165 in 30 overs and restricts the opponent to 150 in 30 overs.
(165 ÷ 30) − (150 ÷ 30) = 5.500 − 5.000 = +0.500
When the overs are reduced before the match starts, the new reduced overs are simply used as the match quota throughout.
6DLS-adjusted chase
Original target was 220 in 50 overs, but rain revises the chase to a DLS target of 140 in 28 overs, and the chasing team gets there in 26 overs.
(141 ÷ 26) − (220 ÷ 50) = 5.423 − 4.400 = +1.023
The chasing team's figures use the revised DLS target and revised overs, not the original 220 off 50 — those numbers belong to a match that no longer exists in its original form.
7Qualification match: two teams level on points
Two teams enter the final league match with identical points. Team A's cumulative NRR before the match is +0.210; Team B's is +0.180.
Whichever team's final-match performance pushes its season-long NRR higher wins the tiebreak = Team A qualifies if its NRR stays above +0.180 after the match
Because points are equal, this single match's cumulative effect on each team's full-season NRR decides the remaining spot.
8Knockout eliminator scenario
Three teams finish level on points; only one advances. Team X: +0.410, Team Y: +0.055, Team Z: −0.120.
Rank purely by cumulative NRR once points are tied = Team X advances
In a three-way tie, the team with the healthiest cumulative NRR takes the spot; the other two are eliminated regardless of how those points were earned.
9Negative NRR example
Across a tournament, a team has scored 1,240 runs in 240 overs faced and conceded 1,310 runs in 238 overs bowled.
(1240 ÷ 240) − (1310 ÷ 238) = 5.167 − 5.504 = −0.338
A moderately negative NRR like this is recoverable with one or two strong wins by a healthy margin.
10Positive NRR from a single dominant win
A team's NRR sits at +0.050 before its last match. It then scores 210 in 20 overs and bowls the opponent out for 110 in 20 overs, folded into a season total of 2,050 runs / 400 overs faced and 1,900 runs / 400 overs bowled after the match.
(2050 ÷ 400) − (1900 ÷ 400) = 5.125 − 4.750 = +0.375
One lopsided result late in a tournament can move a season-long NRR by several tenths, which is exactly why margins matter so much in the last round.

IPL Qualification Scenarios

These are illustrative patterns based on how NRR routinely decides IPL playoff races.

1Final-day three-way swing
Three teams sit on 16 points before the last round of league matches. The team that wins its final match by the largest margin — not simply the team that wins — takes the last playoff spot, because all three are guaranteed to finish level on points.
2Bat-first margin vs chase-fast margin
Team A wins batting first by 65 runs, using all 20 overs. Team B wins a chase by 6 wickets with 4 overs unused. Even with a smaller runs margin, Team B's NRR gain is typically larger because it used fewer overs to get the win.
3Protecting a healthy NRR going into the last match
A team already qualified on points sometimes still bats to maximise its run rate or bowls to minimise overs conceded, purely to protect a high seed in the playoffs, since a better league-stage position can mean an easier knockout draw.
4Recovering from an early-tournament collapse
A team that loses its first three matches heavily can still finish with a positive cumulative NRR if its remaining wins are large and its remaining losses are narrow — NRR rewards the whole season, not the worst week of it.
5A single bowled-out match skewing the table
A team bowled out for a very low total is treated as having used its full overs quota, which can push its cumulative NRR down sharply in a way that a similar total scored while losing wickets slowly and batting out the innings would not.

When three teams in a round-robin group all finish with the same number of wins, cumulative NRR across every group match — not just matches against each other — decides seeding into the knockouts.

A match reduced by rain and settled under DLS still counts in full for NRR, using the revised target and overs, and can be the difference between two closely matched sides.
3Chasing a small target in very few overs to boost NRR
A side already through to the next stage may still chase down a modest target as fast as possible, purely to bank a large NRR gain relative to the small number of overs faced, ahead of a tournament seeding cutoff.
4Recovering after a heavy opening defeat
A team that loses its first group match by a wide margin can still finish the group stage with a positive NRR if subsequent wins are large and subsequent losses are narrow.
5Two teams level on points and net run rate to two decimal places apart
When the gap between two teams' cumulative NRR is extremely small, the very last completed match of the group stage — anywhere in the group, not just involving those two teams — can be the deciding factor.

How NRR Is Calculated, Step by Step

  1. Add up every run your team has scored across all completed matches this tournament.
  2. Add up every over your team has faced, applying the bowled-out and early-finish rules to each match first.
  3. Divide total runs scored by total overs faced — this is your batting run rate.
  4. Repeat the same two steps for runs conceded and overs bowled — this is your bowling run rate (the rate scored against you).
  5. Subtract the bowling run rate from the batting run rate. The result, to three decimal places, is your NRR.

Averaging per-match NRR instead of using cumulative totals
NRR is not the average of each match's individual run-rate difference. Add up all runs scored, all overs faced, all runs conceded and all overs bowled first, then apply the formula once.

Using the full 20 or 50 overs for a team that was bowled out
A bowled-out team's overs faced is capped at its full allotment, but only because it got bowled out — this is often applied incorrectly to teams that were not dismissed.

Using the full overs allotment for a team that won the chase early
A team that successfully chases down a target before its overs are used only has its actual overs faced counted, not the full quota.

Converting overs as a decimal fraction instead of base-6
Overs use a base-6 sub-unit for balls, so 19.4 overs is 19 and 4/6 overs (19.667), not 19.4 in decimal terms.

Advanced Rules Behind NRR

The bowled-out rule

If a team is bowled out before using its full quota of overs, that team's overs faced (or bowled, from the opponent's side) is treated as the full allotment for NRR purposes — not the fewer overs it actually took to lose all its wickets.

The early-finish rule

If a team successfully chases down the target and wins before its overs run out, only the overs it actually faced count, not the full quota. This is why fast, clean chases are worth chasing hard for — winning in fewer overs improves the batting run rate without adding extra overs to the denominator.

Pro tip
A 6-wicket win in 15 overs while chasing a 20-over total is usually worth more to NRR than a 40-run win batting first and using all 20 overs, because the chase used a quarter fewer overs.
